Open Bible Gospel Church
Our Church Community
In approximately 1995, the Lord moved upon the heart of Minister Jerome McLeod (then serving as Associate Minister of the St. Phillips Baptist Church) to start a church. Through much prayer and after consulting with his pastor, Reverend Matthew Riley Jr., an earnest search for a site began in the summer of 1999. After looking at several buildings throughout the Baltimore area and prayerful consideration, the church was founded at 424 East 30th Street. The first worship service was held on February 5, 2000.
The name Open Bible Gospel Church was chosen by Pastor McLeod. The name came to him when he saw his open Bible on his living room table. He thought of many good implications of an open Bible. An open Bible implies that one is ready to read the Word, receive the Word, study the Word, mediate on the Word, and to obey the Word. The word “Gospel” was added because Pastor McLeod felt the primary mission of any church should be the dissemination of the good news about Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection.
The first motto of the church was “Committed to God, Committed to men”, but was shortly thereafter changed to “Loving God, Loving People.” This motto is based on Matthew 22:37-40. It first emphasizes first and foremost our duty to love God, and secondarily our duty to love people.
In December 2012, after 10 years being located at the 30th Street location, Open Bible made a strategic move to 5629 Harford Road as a temporary location. The church remained at this location until the Lord blessed Open Bible to be able to purchase the building at our present location, 1925 Dukeland Street.
The Lord called Pastor McLeod from labor to reward and on Memorial Day in 2017, Open Bible called Rev. Dr. Ronald J. Williams, Jr. to be the second pastor of Open Bible Gospel Church. Dr. Williams, Jr. is a native of Baltimore, Maryland who accepted and announced his call to preach the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ in 1995. He was reared in the ministry of Shiloh Christian Community Church that provided him with a firm foundation in the faith. Dr. Williams hit the ground running as he led Open Bible in several ministry events that has blessed the community.
